How Much Should You Have in an Emergency Fund?

Use a range, not a promise

Emergency-fund targets are often expressed as months of expenses, but the amount that fits one household may not fit another. Comparing several cushions can be more useful than treating one dollar amount as universally correct.

Start with your essential costs

The calculator multiplies essential monthly expenses by the coverage period you select. Current savings reduce the remaining amount, while monthly contributions and optional APY determine the projected timeline.

What Counts as an Essential Expense?

Housing

Rent or mortgage payments and required housing costs.

Utilities

Electricity, water, heating, and basic connectivity.

Food

Groceries and other basic household food costs.

Transportation

Required commuting, fuel, transit, and essential vehicle costs.

Required obligations

Insurance, minimum debt payments, healthcare, and dependent care.

Optional spending

Entertainment and discretionary purchases are generally excluded unless you intentionally want them covered.

3 Months vs. 6 Months vs. 9 Months

3-month cushion

A smaller planning target that may be quicker to build. It is a comparison, not personalized advice.

6-month cushion

A larger scenario with more months of selected expenses. It is a comparison, not personalized advice.

9-month cushion

An extended scenario that requires more savings or a longer timeline. It is a comparison, not personalized advice.

How Long Could It Take?

A larger monthly contribution generally shortens the projected timeline. The what-if scenarios use sensible increments based on your current contribution, while the schedule shows how contributions and estimated interest could build the balance over time.

Emergency Fund vs. Paying Off Debt

Both goals may draw from the same monthly cash flow. Use the Debt Payoff Planner to examine repayment scenarios, then compare them with the emergency savings timeline without treating either tool as a personal recommendation.

How the Emergency Fund Calculator Works

Target = essential monthly expenses x selected coverage months. Progress is current emergency savings divided by the target, capped at 100%. The timeline uses monthly contributions and the same APY-equivalent monthly rate, contribution timing, cent rounding, and projection limits documented for the Savings Goal Calculator.

Emergency Fund Calculator FAQs

There is no universal amount. A practical way to create a planning target is to multiply essential monthly expenses by a selected number of months. This calculator compares 3-, 6-, and 9-month cushions and lets you choose a custom whole number from 1 to 24 months.

Add the monthly costs you would still need to cover during an income interruption, then multiply that total by your selected coverage period. Subtract emergency savings you already have to see the remaining amount.

A 3-month cushion is one planning scenario, not a universal recommendation. The amount that feels appropriate can depend on income stability, household obligations, insurance coverage, access to support, and the kinds of unexpected costs you want the fund to cover.

It is a target equal to six months of the expenses you choose to include. For example, $3,000 of essential monthly expenses produces an $18,000 six-month planning target.

Include required minimum debt payments if you would need to keep making them during an income interruption. Extra payments above the required minimum can be evaluated separately.

This calculator is designed around essential costs such as housing, utilities, groceries, transportation, insurance, minimum debt payments, basic healthcare, and dependent care. You can intentionally include other spending if you want a larger cushion.

The timeline depends on your target, current emergency savings, monthly contribution, and optional APY. A positive monthly contribution is required here to calculate a practical completion date.

If you enter an expected APY, the projection includes estimated interest using the same savings engine as the Savings Goal Calculator. Actual APYs, account rules, fees, withdrawals, and taxes can change the result.

Emergency savings and extra debt repayment can compete for the same cash flow. The right balance depends on your circumstances. This calculator shows the savings side, while the Debt Payoff Planner can compare repayment scenarios without deciding the allocation for you.
